- <p> DIED. WILLIAM GOLDING, 81, author; of a heart attack; in Perranarworthal,
- England. Golding's first published novel, Lord of the Flies,
- won critical acclaim for its disturbing depiction of the descent
- of marooned schoolboys into barbarism. Golding, who published
- nine other novels, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983
- and was knighted five years ago.
